This 2019 Fall + Winter issue features an interview with photographers who drove across the states creating portraits of grandmothers, a collaborative dinner series aimed at bringing creative women together, seasonal drink recipes highlighting Midwest spirits, and a visit to a multi-disciplinary art and design studio with a focus on activist-driven products.

CONTRIBUTORS

Jenna Blazevich runs an independent and collaborative, multi-disciplinary studio called Vichcraft. Combining hand craft processes and tactile mediums with a digital design skill set, she strives to work right around the line between art and design to build a collection of activist-driven products. Her background in textiles and pattern-making continues to inform her approach as a graphic designer and feminist artist.

Hilary Bovay is the production, fulfillment and admin associate at Yellowcake Shop. She is behind the efficiency, warmth, and personal touch of customer service, as well as maintaining everyday organization within Yellowcake. She’s also a freelance photographer and assists with creating visual content for Yellowcake.

Geneva Boyett is a wedding photographer in Chicago. She and her husband live in a sun-filled apartment with their two cats where they spend their free time cooking yummy food and trying to spend as much time outside as possible. When she’s not shooting wedding work, she loves collaborating with small businesses and telling stories of how powerful community can be.

Chelsea Chandler is a designer and the owner of Lady January, a studio helping passionate people build honest brands. She co-founded the Twice Nourished series as a way to share what she loves — design, food, and creating space for genuine conversation — with more women. Originally from Michigan, she spent the second half of her twenties in our nation's capital, but returned to the Midwest and now happily calls Chicago home.

Kylie has run her lifestyle photography business for seven years and is now pursuing a career in creative and commercial photography. She loves northern Michigan farmers’ markets, her two dogs, and hammocking on Belle Isle.

John Hanson is a photographer based in Detroit, Michigan. He is currently in production and finishing his first photography book Grandmothers of America in 2020 with fellow photographer Joseph Schultz. His work centers around nature, texture, and the analog process.

Bailey Jean is an herbalist who founded Wax and Wane Herbals while working as a barista in Chicago and foraging for chamomile under the train tracks in Logan Square.  She works intimately with taboo subjects like trauma, depression, and anxiety through her work with healing plants that much of the holistic health world has shunned. Her work is inspired by the healing capacity of weeds, community, and the depths of emotions.
